Coding in the Classroom
Limited Capacity full

Using Google CS First coding , I would show teachers (most likely 3rd grade and above) how to incorporate coding into subject areas. I would use the Storytelling unit (http://bit.ly/2TFBt8f) found in the Google CS First curriculum to show how it can be used to reinforce narrative storytelling techniques, such as dialogue, settings, and ultimately a narrative. I would order the student materials to use in the session so teachers would see exactly what the students would get from the program as well.

Digital Storytelling: Give Your Students an Authentic Purpose for Writing and a Global Voice
1. Discuss narrative story structure--What makes a great story great? Narrative story structure is the building blocks of good storytelling. Without it, you just have a tech project. With it, you have an interesting story that meets or exceeds the CCSS. We will provide participants with graphic organizers, slide shows and YouTube links about story structure. 2. Discuss the digital storytelling process--from ideas to storyboards to production. 3. Talk about the various types of digital stories and view exemplars created by students. 4. Discuss technique--For example: long shots, vs. close-ups, sound effects, fade, etc... 5. Discuss hardware and software--Provide participants with how-to videos that will guide them through the technology part. 6. Discuss going global--how to hold a film festival at your school, and how to create a YouTube channel to house student work.

Advanced Phonological Awareness
Do you have upper elementary students with poor spelling, inaccurate decoding of new words, mispronunciation of words, and difficulty remembering or recalling new words? Instruction in phonological awareness increases the likelihood that students will learn to read and spell with accuracy and fluency. This session will focus on explicit, systematic instruction of advanced phonemic awareness activities, especially for students in grades 3-6.
